FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A few things you'll want to know while making your vacation plans.

Can you give me an overview of your property?
Absolutely! Welcome to Sunset Sanctuary Nosara! If you’re someone who loves nature and has an adventurous streak, this is your kind of place. Nestled on a hill overlooking the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge—a haven for rare marine life like three species of sea turtles—this sanctuary is all about living in harmony with the wild. The views are stunning, but the experience comes with its share of surprises! Read on.

Life here is a bit more unpredictable than what you are likely used to. Power and water outages happen now and then (way more than in the US, Canada, or Europe), but don’t worry—they’re usually pretty brief, and we’ve got backup internet batteries and emergency supplies just in case.

Jungle life is tough on stuff. That’s why we’ve kept things simple and functional with rustic, minimalist furnishings. Embrace an essentialist mindset when packing, and you’ll fit right in.

To protect the beautiful biodiversity around us, we kindly ask guests to go easy on pollution—whether it’s toxic chemicals, noise, and even light at night, which can negatively impact nesting turtles in the ocean below. Let’s all do our part to keep this place pristine.
How far is Nosara from the airport?
Nosara is approximately 2 1/2 hours by car. Taxis and tourist vans are available at the airport.

Sansa Airlines and Green Airways offer a scenic 20-minute flight from Liberia to Nosara. Sunset Sanctuary is a short climb up the hill from the Nosara airport.
Do we need a car to get around?
Realistically, yes, and four-wheel drive is strongly recommended. Sunset Sanctuary is not really walkable to or from attractions and the dirt road up the hill to the property is fairly steep and rugged. While the many readily-available tuk-tuk taxis in Nosara are a fun option for getting around, we’re confident your vacation will be most enjoyable with a 4WD vehicle.

Better yet, depending on your taste for adventure, a quad is a fun option for getting around town, and makes getting up our side of the mountain a breeze.

There are a handful of quad rental outfits in Nosara and rental cars are available at the Liberia airport and in Nosara.

What should I know if I'm bringing children?
Good question. The property is perched high on a hill with steep drop offs on all sides, and the pools and patios don’t have railings or gates. It’s not ideal for little kids who aren’t closely monitored, and even adults should be mindful while moving around. Safety first!
What about bugs and critters?
For sure, you’ll encounter plenty of wildlife here. Monkeys and turtles and pizotes are charming and fun to see, but we also share the land with spiders, scorpions, snakes, frogs and ants, among other creatures, while crocodiles call the rivers home. The golden rule? Avoid the rivers and stay alert to the natural world around you, and you should have a fabulous visit.
How far is Sunset Sanctuary from the beach and restaurants?
We are a 5 minute drive uphill from the airport, and about 12 minutes from the beaches and main tourist areas. We are close enough to partake in and enjoy the waves and flavors of Nosara, but far enough away to lay back and enjoy a quiet ocean breeze and a dip in your private infinity pool, high above the fray.
